Uneven Insulation: A Common Problem in Western Massachusetts Home

Our team of BPI-certified home performance professionals treat each and every home we work with as a unique one, taking a building science-based approach to all tasks to help create a safer environment, reduce energy bills and boost home comfort. We’ve also seen our fair share of different scenarios in our daily travels, witnessing home performance issues of all shapes and sizes throughout the Pioneer Valley.
One of the most common issues we encounter on the job is that of uneven insulation—especially in attics. Many homeowners don’t even realize that they have a problem on their hands, yet uneven insulation can bring about a variety of issues.
The Problem of Uneven Insulation
While uneven insulation may not sound like too much of a big deal at face value, it can have a number of detrimental effects on home performance. When insulation is uneven it creates different R-values, or thermal resistance, in different parts of the attic. To put this into perspective, say you have insulation that peaks at R-40 and valleys at R-20. You might assume that the average R value in your attic is R-30 (40 + 20 = 60 / 2 = 30). However, since the R-20 section allows for more heat flow than the R-40 section, your actual R value will be lower than the average of R-30.
What Does This Mean for My Home?
If you haven’t given the insulation in your attic a second thought before, now’s the time to take a closer look. You may think that it’s insulated at an appropriate level, but if it’s insulated unevenly, this is most likely not the case. Chances are that your building envelope could benefit from tightening with air sealing and insulation, both of which form a solid basis for true home performance.
Tightening your building envelope can come along with a number of benefits, including the following:
Reduced Monthly Utility Bills
Longer Systems Life
Enhanced Home Performance
Boosted Comfort Levels
Better Indoor Air Quality
With summer in full swing,, now’s the perfect time to enjoy these and other benefits. The team at Energia places a great deal of focus on improving the building envelope, and dealing with uneven insulation is a major part of the process. We’ll work with you to ensure that we have a complete understanding of your home performance needs, answering whatever questions that pop up along the way.
